Basamma Hearing Foundation was created in memory of our grand mother who was pillar and huge inspiration in our lives. Being ENT surgeon, working in UK and having working in Cochlear Implant Centre as a trainee. I have seen the difference it makes in a child's life who was born deaf, where the deafness was picked up very early in life and appropriate measures were taken to rehabilitate the child and guide them to lead normal life.
Although current government and other programmes in India concentrate in providing hearing aid and cochlear implants for children born deaf. One of the key programme - new born hearing screening, was not available to majority of the population in India at this stage. As to my knowledge this is key important programme, where hearing loss can be identified soon after birth and when appropriate measures are taken. Child can develop normal speech and language, which help child to have normal life without any disability. In majority of developed countries, this programme is available to everyone - hence, it is called Universal New Born Hearing Screening Programme. The main goal of this programme, is to eradicate Congenital hearing loss from the communities.
With the help of my father and very dedicated friends and colleagues in Bellari, we started this journey through our charity. Our initial goal is to create public awareness about congenital (born deaf) hearing loss, its impact in child's life and guide them to have early rehabilitation to rectify the problem to avoid any disability and lead normal life.
We are providing New born hearing screening for all children born in Government hospital in Bellari for free. We do provide similar service to babies born in private hospitals for nominal fee when they contact our team. We also provide support in getting all the paper work and guide them to appropriate centres for further rehabilitation. We are working with our dedicated team in District hospital in providing free hearing aids to those adults who cannot afford hearing aids nor comes under any government programmes for free hearing aids. We are also working with our dedicated teams / Institutions in Bellari, Bangalore and Mysore - to create patient pathways and make Bellari as one of the centres for Cochlear implant and rehabilitation.
Any donations / help will go long way to sustain this service
